The
most culturally responsive strategies that teachers can utilize to "connect" with students and "capture" their attention is
to engage students in discussions about their dreams and aspirations; understand the unique issues and obstacles confronting
them; assist them in setting goals and conceptualizing strategies; and giving them the capacity to pursue their dreams and
aspirations.
This book is as important for teachers as it is for students. Of the 3Rs,
i.e., Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships, it is relationships that provides the key to tapping into the intrinsic motivation
of students and unlocking their oftentimes hidden gifts and talents.
The
"My Dreams: Student Journal" is the companion to the book, "Follow Your Dreams: Lessons That I Learned in School." Students
engage work through a set of activities through which they write their own story and create their own plan. Where are they
beginning? What obstacles will they have to overcome? Who can they depend on to support them? What are their dreams and aspirations?
What must they do to open the pathway to their dream colleges and careers?
As students
complete their journals, each activity requires 3 simple steps: Reflect, Discuss, and Create. Reflect on their circumstances.
Discuss their options and opportunities. Create a plan.
